Sunnah and Health Tips for Drinking Water

يسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَتَنَفَّسُ فِي الشَّرَابِ ثَلَاثًا

Anas (Radi Allahu anhu) narrated :The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to breathe three times in the course of a drink (he used to drink in three gulps).[1]

Benefits for this subject.

  • It’s sunnah for a person drinking water to avoid drinking it like a camel.
  • He should breathe outside of the glass, cup or bottle.
  • The description for this act is 1st say, “بسم الله   “ , In the name of Allah, then drink. Next, he should remove the drink from his mouth. After that he says, “ الحمد الله “, All Praises belong to Allah, while breathing outside the glass, cup or bottle. Then should repeat all of these acts again twice. [2]
  • As-Samiree said: A person should say,” In the name of Allah “after he begins and, “All Praises belong to Allah “, every time he stops drinking. [3]
  • Ibn Al-Jawzee said the scholars of medicine say that person shouldn’t drink water while eating, unless it’s his norm.[4]
  • A person must avoid breathing inside the glass, cup or bottle while drinking. This has been authentically collected on the Prophet. (ﷺ) said: When you are drinking don’t breathe inside the container.” [5]
  • Some doctors have said, a person shouldn’t  drink water while he’s at the dinner table, before breakfast on an empty stomach, or immediately after eating, until he’s full and has completed his meal ,and the food has settled in his stomach.
  • Other doctors have mentioned that a person shouldn’t drink cold water on an empty stomach, unless he has a severe infection.
  • After showering, making love, and doing any strenuous exercise then avoid drinking water in one gulp.
  • A person shouldn’t drink water at night time unless he really needs to do so, then he should only drink what he needs and when drinks water at night and find that his thirst increases then he should just remain patient.[6]
